1 Check if you are eligible

In order to apply, students must meet the following requirements:

a) to hold a Portuguese secondary education diploma OR a legally equivalent qualification (see the foreign diplomas accepted here [17])

b) to have taken the Portuguese national secondary education examinations in 2025, 2024, 2023 or 2022 and to have achieved in these examinations a mark equal to 95 points or higher (on a scale of 0 to 200 points) OR a foreign diploma's final examination considered equivalent. (see the foreign exams accepted here [18])

This regime does not apply to students with International Student Status (as defined in Decree-Law 36/2014 of 10th March and ruled by NR/R/0105/2019 of 7th March, which publishes the Implementing Regulation of the International Student Status of Universidade Católica Portuguesa).

Application score (for ranking purposes): 50% of the secondary education diploma’s grade + 50% of the final exams (25% each exam). Minimum total application grade of 100.0 points (in a 0 to 200 grading scale). 

ESB reserves itself the right to set a minimum application grade higher than 100 points in each application call depending on the quality of the results achieved by applicants.

3 Gather the documents

To apply, students must present:

  • Depending on whether they hold a Portuguese secondary education diploma (a) or an legally equivalent foreign diploma (b):

a)      ENES Form (Exames Nacionais do Ensino Secundário) issued in 2025 – if not provided at the time of application, the original document must be presented on registration

b)      foreign secondary education diploma[1] + certificate attesting the score achieved in the final examination (see the tab "Check if you are eligible") considered equivalent[1] + certificate of equivalence to the Portuguese secondary education diploma (to be request in a portuguese secondary education school) (see the foreign diplomas accepted here [18])

  • Copy of Identification Document
  • Declaration of Eligibility [20]
  • Class selection form [21][2] (only required for the application to the Undergraduate degree in Microbiology)
  • Application form for special quota [22] (if applicable)
  • Special Education Needs Form [23] (if applicable)

Students who have already attended a higher education course and wish to apply for equivalence of prior learning, are required to submit their transcripts with the subjects successfully completed in higher education (including marks and workload) as well as the subjects’ syllabus/content.n

 

[1] Documents issued in other countries must be legalized by the Portuguese diplomatic or consular authority in the issuing country, or contain the Hague Apostille [24], except for United Kingdom, and countries from EU, or European Economic Area, or European Free Trade Association. When written in foreign languages other than Spanish, English, French or Italian, these documents must be translated into Portuguese, according to the Portuguese notary laws. The original documents must be presented on registration (if not previously provided).
 
[2] In the academic year 2025/26, the Undergraduate degree in Microbiology will offer to its students the possibility of attending a class taught entirely in English, in addition to the class taught in Portuguese. The opening of this class in English is subject to a minimum number of students enrolled.

6 Check the results
The results will be published in a digital platform of restricted access to the candidates, who will receive the credentials and access link by email, on a date close to the publication of the results, being presented with one of the following designations:
  • "Admitted" - if the candidate is admitted without any conditions
  • "Referred to the Next Call" - will be evaluated at the next phase on an equal basis with new candidates appearing at that phase
  • "Not Admitted"
Only Admitted candidates will be able to proceed to the registration.
7 Registration

For the registration process it will be necessary to submit:

  • Identification document and vaccination record booklet with up-to-date tetanus immunization
  • Information requested by the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (RAIDES survey [30])
  • Registration form and other specific documents to be indicated at the time of admission
  • Proof of payment of the registration fee and first monthly tuition (see the "Fees and Tuitions” tab)
  • 1 Passport photo

The originals of the qualification certificates must be presented on a date and time to be defined by the Academic Services.

  • Having been registered in a different institution/course in a previous academic years but not having completed it. Students are not required to have successfully completed any of the subjects attended at their home education institution.

1 Check if you are eligible

Students who satisfy the cumulatively legal conditions described below may apply under this regime:

  • Being at least 23 years old on the 31st of December 2024
  • not have the qualifications required to access higher education under another regimen

Applicants will have to take a special test, at the Faculty of Biotechnology, covering the following areas:

  • Mathematics

 a) Area and volume calculation

 b) Basic Trigonometry

 c) Graphs' and tables' analysis

 d) Elementary arithmetic calculations

  •  Biology

 a) General organization of cells

 b) evolution; evolutionary agents

 c) Cellular respiration

  •  Chemistry

 a) Constitution of matter (atoms, molecules, ions)

 b) Adjustment of chemical equations

In addition to these areas, the written test also includes the ability of interpretation and written expression, either in Portuguese or in English.

Applicants who achieve a mark lower than 10 points (on a 0 to 20 scale) on the written text shall be eliminated. When approved, applicants will have to take an interview.

Ranking and selection for the Undergraduate Degrees will take into consideration the mark attained in the exam, as well as the applicant’s motivation (to be assessed during the interview) and Curriculum Vitae or resume.

Merit scholarships

      

 For new students (1st year):

 » Number of scholarships: equivalent to 12 tuition 100% scholarships.

 » Application Regimen and Call: exclusively for Regular Applicants who applied on the 1st and 2nd Calls. The  remaining scholarships  from the 1st Call will be awarded in the 2nd Call.

 » Eligibility criteria: Merit scholarships are awarded each year to the best applicants for ESB's undergraduate degrees, according to the following:

  • Exemption from tuition fees in the 1st year for students with an application score equal to or higher than 180 points (scale from 0 to 200);
  • 75% reduction in tuition fees in the 1st year for students with an application score equal to or higher than 170 points (scale from 0 to 200);
  • 50% reduction in tuition fees in the 1st year for students with an application score equal to or higher than 160 points (scale from 0 to 200);
  • These scholarships are not cumulative with any other benefit, except social benefits, in this case up to 100% of the annual tuition fee.

» Must i apply for the scholarship?: There is no need to apply. Merit scholarships will be awarded automatically according to the defined criteria and disclosed along with the admission results in each of the calls.

This information does not excuse the consultation of the Regulation on merit scholarships.

 Based on academic performance during the course (subsequent years):

 Scholarships are awarded in each academic year to the best students in the 1st and 2nd years, in undergraduate courses with three curricular years, and in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years, in undergraduate courses with four curricular years, according to academic performance.

This information does not excuse the consultation of the Regulation on merit scholarships [34].
